The development of mathematical understanding is dependent upon these key concepts:

  • number conceptualisation

  • number relationships (facts and tables)

  • place value

  • fractions

  • integers

Helping students to master these key concepts should be the major objective of a numeracy programme.

The procedures demonstrated in this series, filmed at Oldfield Primary School , Maidenhead, Berks, can be used by teachers to achieve this objective at any level from child to adult.

1

TEACHING NUMBER RELATIONSHIPS
Once a child has conceptualised number and mastered arithmetic facts, he/she is on the way to building a solid foundation for numeracy. Children who have not mastered the number relationships face considerable difficulties later with mathematics and related subjects.

The instructional materials, structured activities and questioning techniques used in the video demonstrate how to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts; the task of learning facts and tables, considered difficult by many teachers and parents, becomes relatively simple. ~ 55min

2

TEACHING PLACE VALUE
This is a fly on the wall viewing of a real lesson, with Mahesh Sharma teaching Place Value to a class of 30 children. Teachers can observe the classroom set-up, the questioning technique, the way children are encouraged and help each other, the way wrong answers are handled and the way children are encouraged to use the language of mathematics. ~ 58min

3

TEACHING FRACTIONS
Another class lesson with Mahesh Sharma, this time teaching fractions, a difficult concept to teach and learn. This lesson involves the children in making their own fractions and provides a solid foundation for the later extensions of the concept of fractions to decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion. Once again excellent teaching practice can be observed throughout. ~ 42min

4

TEACHING MULTIPLICATION
Using concrete materials, Mahesh Sharma uses the area model of multiplication, a model which can be easily extended later to fractions, decimals and algebra.

Yr 5 children manipulate Cuisenaire rods and Base 10 materials to gain a full understanding of the concept. This is another class lesson. Mahesh Sharma uses OHP Cuisenaire and Base 10 materials. ~ 50min

5

TEACHING DECIMALS & PERCENTAGES
This is Mahesh Sharma teaching Yr 6. The children are led to understand the integration of fractions, decimals and percentages.   Base10 materials and Cuisenaire rods provide the conceptual model. ~ 32min

6

TEACHERS’ QUESTIONS
Mahesh Sharma answers teachers’ questions arising from the lessons of the previous videos.

This video is full of important information, useful for INSET: MOVING ON FROM COUNTING; TAKING MULTIPLICATION FROM CONCRETE TO ABSTRACT; TEACHING MIXED ABILITY CLASSES; REMEDIATION WITH OLDER CHILDREN; MATHEMATICS VOCABULARY; TEACHING TABLES; WORD PROBLEMS; COMPETENCE IN TEACHING. ~ 50min
